Mainstage Productions

Since 1951, BOSTON CHILDREN'S THEATRE has produced a 3-5-play season of mainstage productions each year, corresponding to the Boston school vacation weeks in December, February, and April, and at other times. With 8-10 performances of each show, BCT offers a total of 25-35 performances each year in a professional theatre setting.

Titles include classics from children's literature, folktales from different lands, and newer favorites to both challenge and delight a wide family audience. The total annual attendance for mainstage productions is 10,000-15,000. All BCT productions are cast entirely of young people ages 9-18, drawn from all neighborhoods within Boston and surrounding communities to a radius of 50+ miles.

SCHOOL DAY PERFORMANCES are scheduled along with each mainstage production. An additional 1000-2000 youngsters enjoy live theatre performances by their peers as fieldtrip excursions during the regular school day.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH—BCT provides free and discounted tickets to enable youngsters from Boston's underserved neighborhoods to attend mainstage performances, and also to participate in classes, camp programs, and special collaborative projects with area youth organizations and community centers. Each year, over 1000 students enjoy the magic of live theatre firsthand through this program, who would otherwise be unable to participate. The combined value of these outreach opportunities is more than $60,000 annually.
